Bartels was responsible for concept, permit design, tender documentation, detail enginerring and site-supervision.
The crown is laid out as a regular octagon with a 35 m diagonal. It rests on a foundation slab and consists of eight pillars with complex geometry, as well as an internal rotunda. A wide staircase and an elevator shaft were designed inside, providing access to an observation terrace located 15 m above ground level. The terrace itself is enclosed by sculptural parapets that extend from the crown’s pillars. The 40 m-high statue of the Virgin Mary was designed as a monolithic reinforced-concrete shell.
The hands, which were the most challenging elements to model, were designed as precast reinforced-concrete components, manufactured on site and installed in specially prepared recesses within the statue. A steel communication core was constructed inside the figure to facilitate its construction, as well as subsequent maintenance, inspection, and access to the statue’s highest point—the head, which features a hydraulically operated access hatch.
Less than 30 months elapsed between commissioning the project, its completion, and obtaining the occupancy permit.
